STOAT

The stoat (Mustela erminea), also known as the Eurasian ermine, Beringian ermine and ermine, is a mustelid native to Eurasia and the northern regions of North America. Because of its wide circumpolar distribution, it is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It was introduced into New Zealand in the late 19th century to control rabbits, but had a devastating effect on native bird populations and was nominated as one of the world's top 100 "worst invaders".

The name ermine is used for species in the genus Mustela, especially the stoat, in its pure white winter coat, or the fur thereof.Ermine fur was used in the 15th century by Catholic monarchs, who sometimes used it as the mozzetta cape. It has long been used on the ceremonial robes of members of the United Kingdom House of Lords. It was also used in capes on images such as the Infant Jesus of Prague.

Male great crested newts are like little water dragons. Soot-coloured and crusty, boasting in spring a spine like a miniature mountain range and a belly bright as embers, they are far larger than our other two newt species and quite unmistakable. The females are a force to be reckoned with, too. Although they lack the males’ crest, they can grow to lengths of more than six inches. They live on land for most of the year, eating worms and other invertebrates, and only seek out ponds — which must be large and clean — so they can breed. In April and May the male dances to attract a female; once mated, she’ll lay up to 250 sticky eggs, each folded into a little envelope made of leaves.

Underneath the still leafless oaks, something was glinting in the spring sunshine. Investigation revealed a partially buried milk bottle. Dug out, the bottle was seen to bear the words Co-op Dairy, York Road, Doncaster. The milk had long since been drunk, Doncaster dairy closed decades ago, but the glass container had taken on a new life. Packed with black soil, moss and a tenacious writhe of roots, the bottle had been colonised by a wood sorrel plant. A number of light green, trefoil leaves shone inside the glass, while a single white flower rose to where a straw, or human lips had once sipped. Dropped during some long-ago picnic, the bottle had become a vase for one of spring’s loveliest flowers.

Checka (Russia)

In 1921, the Troops for the Internal Defense of the Republic (a branch of the Cheka) numbered at least 200,000. They policed labor camps, ran the Gulag system, conducted requisitions of food, and put down rebellions and riots by workers and peasants and mutinies in the Red Army.

The organization was dissolved in 1922 and succeeded by the State Political Directorate or GPU.

There's a really good movie about these guys, 'The Chekist' that might interest you.

The Chekist (Russian: Чекист) is a 1992 Russian-French historical drama film directed by Aleksandr Rogozhkin, based on a 1923 short story by Vladimir Zazubrin. It tells the story of a bloody work and downfall of a Soviet Cheka security official involved in mass executions during the Russian Civil War. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival.[1]

Plot
The film is set during the Russian Civil War in the period of the Red Terror. In a provincial Cheka (the All-Russian Emergency Commission for Combating Counter-Revolution and Sabotage) office in an unnamed small town, routine bureaucratic work is taking place. Every day, a Cheka troika tribunal made of director Srubov and his assistants Pepel and Katz reads out a long list of all kinds of real and perceived counter-revolutionaries and class enemies. Those arrested are always immediately found guilty and the sentence, regardless of the accusation, gender and age of the person, is the same – to be shot.

The terrible conveyor of death operates in the basement, overseen by Srubov: the prisoners are systematically taken out of their cell, ordered to undress, placed against the wall in fives, and shot, usually in the back of the head. Following the secret killings, the naked corpses are then dragged by feet through a special window in the cellar, loaded into a truck, and taken away, to forever disappear without a trace. - Wiki

In Australian slang smick means to be sharply dressed.

'You look really smick in that outfit' or 'You would look smicker in the black dress'

Walking under a pussy willow is a special springtide treat. On sunny days, the throng of pollinators feeding on the catkins purr musically. Even during the many cold, damp days, there will be something to hear, as lone bumblebee queens forage. Water-resistant and wearing fluffy fur, the bumblebee queens are adapted to sullen springs. Tree bumblebees are likely to be one of these chilly day willow visitors. With a ginger thorax, black abdomen and pure white tail, they are a striking sight. A recent arrival from continental Europe, they were only added to the British list in 2001. The queens nest in aerial sites: trees, eaves, bird boxes. Smaller versions of the queen, the workers and males will emerge in May.
